What are BCAAs and when should you use them?

BCAAs are amino acids that promote recovery. They are stored in the muscles as an emergency energy source. During physical effort, your body first uses glycogen stored in your muscles and liver to provide energy when its reserves are depleted. BCAAs are then released into your body to compensate for this lack of energy. They prevent what is known as catabolism, i.e. the destruction of your muscle fibers, more specifically proteins, to release energy, and promote your body’s anabolism, i.e. recovery. BCAAs therefore help maintain energy levels during training and greatly aid recovery.
